Tanner DeVore is no stranger to the green screen—but that undersells his craft. What he’s done is cast short-form video into something denser. He’s world building!
Take this video. The door chimes… An employee yells from back of house. Tanner’s standing at an impossible angle inside a screenshot of a Subway that doesn’t quite obey physics. Scooby’s there. A stoned Shaggy. It plays like chaos, but it’s crafted. Underneath the lo-fi aesthetic is something closer to film studies than TikTok. Please watch this.
We had so much fun that day. Over grilled cheese, we talked about our relationships, growing up as gay boys, and what’s next. I started the day as just a fan—but I left with a new friend.
With your podcast, TANGENT, what has surprised you the most about long form content?
Surprisingly, rambling for 40 minutes without a script is easy when you’re ADHD.

Last time you followed your gut?
I decided to impulsively travel to NYC just to feel something. No plans and couch hopping. It was such a routine break and it woke me up.
What was your dream job as a kid?
I wanted to be a crime lab worker. Just in everybody’s business. And a pediatrician. But I’m too squeamish.

I used to tell people my iPod touch was an iPhone.
Least favorite social media app and why?
Pinterest has so much potential, but the ads are ruining it.
