Julia Shiplett Wants You to Try This On
Come shopping with us and hear her thoughts on NY, LA and Chicago

Imagine how starstruck I was when I arrived at the beach and Julia Shiplett was applying sunblock on her own back.
I didn’t realize I was going to meet her that day—my friend Allison O’Conor had invited me to the beach for the fourth of July. At that point, I’d been a fan of Julia for like five years. I’d seen her perform on an otherwise all-male lineup of comics (yawn) in 2019 where she did a set that has stuck with me for years. I’ll let her stand-up speak for itself, but just know that Julia Shiplett is many things, including: completely hilarious, brimming with charisma, and is ultimately the sweetest person alive.
When I asked Julia what she’d been up to that summer, she mentioned she had just gotten back from filming a show in Toronto. Turns out that show was Benito Skinner’s Overcompensating. Her performance was a fan favorite, garnering hundreds of fan edits by lesbian teens (the most coveted fan base) and we hope to see more of her in season two. Here are a few highlights from our conversation:
How would you describe your comedy in one word?
Acerbic. <3
Unpopular opinion?
Confrontation is a good thing.
Best place to have a cry in Chicago?
On the beach of Lake Michigan. God, I love crying near a body of water.
Fuck marry kill: LA Chicago NY
The most reasonable answer is probably Fuck NY, Marry Chicago, Kill LA.
Except there’s another world where I marry New York, but it’s tumultuous and heartbreaking. Then I have an unexpected tryst with Chicago while I’m there visiting family… it feels easy, warm, safe. I return to NY but never tell them what happened… sometimes I’ll even picture Chicago when New York and I are making love, but I won’t let it go further than that. I can’t. It was a one-time thing, Julia. Let it go.
Either way, LA is six feet under.
Is it a phone call or a FaceTime?
Phone call. If we’re gonna chat for a while, I need to roam with two hands free.
Last thing that made you laugh?
A clip from THR Actress Roundtable where Cynthia Erivo tells a group of white women with the exact same hair color that she has synesthesia. They try (unsuccessfully) to harmonize around her and Cynthia’s like “Um, it went from yellow to green.”
What’s your ideal movie length?
94 minutes. Long enough to consider it “cinema” but short enough for me not to check my phone.
What is your favorite celebrity memoir?
Pageboy :)
What would be your dream role?
Villain in a period drama.
Most memorable Facebook Marketplace story:
Lugging a giant cowhide rug from Queens to my comedy show in Manhattan because I didn’t have time go to home first.
Dealbreaker?
Anything resembling gaslighting. Also, Allbirds.
Therapy?
Big fan but not a current member. Plan to renew this year.
Best song to cry to?
Wise Up - Aimee Man
Best staring out the car window song?
Silver Soul - Beach House
Favorite element?
Water. So powerful. What she giveth, she can easily taketh away.
